THE sentencing of a man who has admitted the attempted murder of a 41-year-old woman has been adjourned.

Warren Flaherty, aged 49, of Greenway Road, Widnes was due to be sentenced at Chester Crown Court today.

The case had been postponed on Monday, August 24 after more information was requested in relation to an interim hospital order that is being sought by the defence.

An interim court order, which lasts for a minimum of 12 weeks, can be obtained if two doctors advise the court that the defendant may have a mental health problem and may need hospital treatment.

Judge Roger Dutton said on Monday that he needed further details about the security of the hospital where Flaherty would be staying should he grant an interim hospital order.

He said: “This is an extraordinarily grave case for which frankly it is a miracle she survived and the defendant is clearly aware of this.”

Flaherty has pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of Alison Sheridan.

He also faces a charge of affray and being in possession of an offensive weapon.

He was arrested after police were called to reports of an assault in Lower Appleton Road at 5.35pm on Saturday, November 8, 2014.

Cheshire Police said the victim had injuries consistent with being caused by a knife.

Flaherty is to be sentenced at Chester Crown Court on Friday, September 4.
