WHEN it comes to saving lives, Widnes children are top of the class.

St Gerard’s Catholic Primary School has been crowned Crucial Crew winner 2016.

Around 1,600 children from schools across Halton leart lifesaving messages after working with emergency crews and safety experts at Select Security Stadium.

Year five pupils from Lugsdale Road were chosen for their excellent participation and commendable behaviour during the visit.

Organiser Michelle Simpson, Halton Council's road safety coodinator, said: "This is a fantastic achievement to be chosen out of the 49 primary schools that attended."

Children acted out seven different scenarios at the annual safety event.

The challenging dramas included a first aid room where children learnt how to place a casualty in the recovery position after checking if they were breathing.

Cheshire Police showed the nine-year-olds how to stay safe online.

A new scenario with Scottish Power warned youngsters of the dangers of electricity.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, Cheshire Police, Halton Council, Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Trust, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, Travel Training, Health Improvement Team and school nurses arranged the scenarios.
