COMMUNITY groups and charities are already reaping the benefits of the new Mersey Gateway bridge.

The Merseylink time bank scheme has donated £100,000 to fund various projects.

A new safe play area has been built for children in West Bank.

Runcorn Rowing Club receive specialist technical advice to develop a new clubhouse.

A rundown courtyard at Brunswick House in Runcorn has been transformed into an outdoor haven for residents.

A new website and branding has been designed for Daresbury district heritage group.

A trike track has been created for Daresbury Primary School and educational workshops have been held for students at Riverside College.

Time Bank was set up to help schools, colleges, charities and community groups.

The scheme works by matching applicants with Merseylink's industry experts and suppliers who give their time to provide professional advice and support.

Neil Wilcock, employment and skills co-ordinator for Merseylink, said: "We set these schemes up to give something back to the local community so it's fantastic to see that they are having such a positive impact.

“Thanks to help from our project team and generous suppliers we have been able to provide specialist support that can be very expensive and without which many of these projects wouldn't have been able to get off the ground."

Merseylink’s regeneration fund has also financed the appointment of community development worker Alison Gleave to help applicants produce business plans, compile funding bids and receive fundraising advice.

Halton Council leader Cllr Rob Polhill said: "It's fantastic to see such significant investment brought to the local community.

“The project has always been more than just a bridge and the incredible success of Merseylink's Time Bank scheme is testament to that.

"The support local organisations are receiving is helping to create a real legacy which will be felt across the borough long after the bridge is open.

The next round of bids opens on Monday and community groups have until June 24 to submit their applications.
