A TEENAGE girl is still shaken up after a man tried to hit her with a golf club near Weston Village in Runcorn.

The 18-year-old was walking along a path leading to Ascot Avenue when she was suddenly assaulted.

The terrifying ordeal happened at around 8.30am yesterday.

The girl’s mum said: “He followed her from the first gate to the golf course zebra crossing and grabbed her.

“He told her not to scream or he would kill her.

“She screamed and saw the golf club coming down to smash over her head and just managed to grab it before it hit her.

“I feel physically sick knowing something worse could have happened.”

The victim was not hurt but left very shaken.

The teenager's mum warned parents to be vigilant.

"Don't let your kids walk along there on their own," she said.

"Make sure they are in a group."

PC Ste Bradshaw said: “As part of our investigation I am looking to speak to anyone who may have seen a man who is described as tall, slim, with ginger hair and wearing a grey and black tracksuit in this area.

“We know that there were other people in the area at the time of this incident and we are keen to speak to them to a part of our enquiries.

“Thankfully the victim has not been injured and a member of the public was able to assist her and report it to us.”

Officers from Runcorn Local Policing Unit are appealing to the public for help to trace the man.

Anyone with information is urged to call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting incident number 158 of 25 May 2016.
