TWO apprentices from Riverside College were selected from hundreds of candidates across the country to take part in the annual Apprentice Ship Cup, part of the Liverpool Tall Ship Regatta 2016.

Michael Kemp, 17, and Callum Jones, 19, are both engineering Apprentices at Getrag Ford Transmissions in Halewood.

They were nominated by the company to take part as a reward for all of their hard work and progress this year.

Former Wade Deacon pupil Callum, from Widnes, said: “At first I was excited but apprehensive as I have never done anything like this before but I had a great week and I would definitely do this again.

“I learnt lots and got to meet some great people.

“I enjoyed preparing and serving food and having the opportunity to learn all there is to sailing.”

The Apprentice Ship Cup is the UK’s largest annual Tall Ships Regatta and provides a unique opportunity for young people to challenge themselves and develop new skills.

The pair joined a crew to sail a Tall Ship for a week.

Michael, from Prescot, said: “I was really excited when I got accepted as I love anything practical.

“I never thought I would get to be a part of something like this.

“It has given me the opportunity to meet new people and develop my team work and life skills which I will be able to apply to apprenticeship.”
