LOCAL boxers Alfie Hill and Rhys Daly both shone at National boxing quarter finals.

Alfie Hill and Rhys Daly from Terry Spencer’s amateur club TitleShot ABC were both in action this weekend in the NAGBC (national association of girls and boys) national boxing tournament.

Both boxers were facing the best boxers in the country at there respective weights.

First up was Rhys Daly who is an exceptional talent with a karate background and just four boxing bouts experience prior to the tournament.

Daly took on a GB squad boxer and national champion who has had 23 fights winning 20 of them.

This is a bout which under normal circumstances a boxer with Daly's experience would never take.

As coach Terry Spencer explains: "In club shows you have control of who you box but in a national competition you have to take on whoever is out in front of you."

Spencer said: "Rhys is not only an exceptional talent, but he has a mature head on his shoulders and went into the bout with the attitude that if he lost he would look at it as a learning experience and take positives from it."

Daly started well and took the opposition by surprise. If they thought they were in for an easy time reality soon struck through Daly's lightning hand speed and quick feet, which immediately put his opponent on the back foot.

At the end of three very exciting rounds his opponent won on a very close split decision, which surprised many.

Despite the loss Daly left the ring bursting with confidence that he can match it with the best in the country even though he is new to boxing.

Spencer has high hope for Rhys who along with Alfie is going to be part of a documentary by British Boxing TV, following their dream journey from the Amateurs to the Pro-boxing game, and which is to be filmed over the next five years.

Next up was Alfie Hill who again matched up against the best boxer in the country at his age and weight.

His opponent was another national champion who had had forty bouts to his name against Hill’s nine bouts.

As coach Terry Spencer explains: "Alfie is a unbelievable talent with a mind set to match, making this a challenge, but once again a fight worth the risk.

Hill got off to a great start taking his opponent by surprise and soon convincing him that it would be no easy fight.

Hill absolutely dominated the bout from start to finish, boxing his best fight of his short career to date.

Hill was relentless in his attack and never gave his opponent the chance to get into the fight.

At the end of three excellent rounds Alfie was awarded the win by unanimous decision which is a huge statement to his division.

Hill now boxes on Saturday in the national semi-final in Bootle and a win there will take him to Guilford for a televised final.

Title shot amateur boxing club is based at Terry Spencer's gym and they had the entire boxing team on display on Sunday, 20 November, entertaining at a local club show at Upton community centre in Widnes.

As Spencer explains: "The club are at a stadium with the pro boxers one week, and the next at a local community centre with 10-year-olds taking there first steps into boxing.

"The involvement excites everyone involved at the club, and we have expectations of huge success from both amateur and Pro boxers in the very near future.

"We have so many huge fights nights ahead and our goal is to get the people of Widnes behind our home grown local professional and amateur boxers and to bring some titles back to our town."
