FIVE people have been treated by paramedics following a crash and vehicle fire on the motorway.

At around 4pm yesterday, Sunday, emergency services were called to reports of the incident on the eastbound carriageway of the M56 between junction 14, Elton, and junction 12, Runcorn.

On arrival, crews found one vehicle well alight in the central reservation.

They also found a crash involving three vehicles.

Firefighters put out the blaze involving the car and a total of five casualties were given precautionary checks by paramedics.

Three fire engines attended the incident as well as paramedics and officers from Cheshire Police and the Highways Agency.

The carriageway was closed while the incident was dealt with.
