Widnes put an end to Broughton Park’s seven match winning run in a thriller at Heath Road.

In a sort of classic ‘game of two halves’ Widnes were really on song in the first forty, building up a 12 – nil lead thanks to tries from Gavin Hatton and Antony Leadbetter and a conversion from Kevin Leadbetter. They also had the numerical advantage following the sending off of a Park player after a brief bout of fisticuffs close to the Widnes line.

But, what a change around in the second half, as Park re-evaluated their tactics to score two tries before getting their noses in front with a well taken drop goal, which gave them a narrow advantage with just eight minutes left.

Despite losing the lead, as well as being on the end of a very heavy second half penalty count, Widnes kept their composure and had the last word as Matt Tindall celebrated his first ever try for the club to earn an exciting victory.
