WIDNES Vikings joined representatives of other Super League Clubs in Newcastle to help promote the upcoming Magic Weekend event.

Following a promotional event at the Tyneside Cinema in the city centre, Hep Cahill revelled in an RFL community event with young players at Cramlington RLFC on Saturday morning before heading to Newcastle United’s stadium for their afternoon fixture.

At half time in Newcastle United’s home fixture against West Bromwich Albion, Cahill escorted Lady Elsie Robson onto the hallowed St James’ Park pitch to rapturous applause.

Lady Elsie, like her husband before her, is hugely popular in the North East.

She received a standing ovation from the 48,000 football supporters in the St James’ Park stands.

On May 30 at 2.30pm, Widnes Vikings will open the First Utility Super League Magic Weekend rugby league extravaganza. The Vikings will play Salford Red Devils before matches between Hull FC and Hull KR and Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors.

When the Vikings take to the field they will do so in the special edition black and white Magic Weekend shirt that has been designed by the club especially for the fixture in Newcastle.

Cahill said: “This was my first visit to Newcastle and I had such a good time. Everyone was so friendly. To have the chance to meet Lady Elsie Robson given our initiative for the foundation set up by her late husband was amazing. It was brilliant to go out on to the pitch with her.

"To witness the reception the football fans gave her was unreal and to stand on the pitch where we’ll all play at Magic Weekend was fantastic.

"The fans in Newcastle are so passionate so it will be brilliant to have so many local people in the stands when we play on May 30th.

"I believe ticket sales are going really well up there. It will be even better if the local people get behind our initiative and wear our black and white colours for Sir Bobby Robson.”

All profits from the sale of the Vikings Magic Weekend shirt will go to the Sir Bobby Robson. Over £10,000 has been raised so far. The Vikings’ initiative has also been supported by a number of celebrities including, most recently, NUFC and England football legend Alan Shearer.
