WIDNES won their first Super League game in nine attempts as they got the better of Huddersfield Giants 24-20.

Vikings fans had to endure a nailbiting last ten minutes before seeing their side take their first league points since March 17 at Wigan.

In terms of field position it was all Widnes in the early stages but despite several near misses they couldn't breah the Giants defence.

Instead it was the visitors who opened the scoring when Danny Brough sent prop Nathan Mason crashing in for a six-pointer.

The Vikings attempts to hit back were again met with robust defence and the Giants increased their lead when Setaimata Sa played the ball without a dummy-half in place and Brough scooped up the pill and raced 80 metres for the softest of scores to make it 10-0.

Widnes fluffed a chance when Chris Bridge's pass on the back of a Lloyd White break was intercepted by Brough and Huddersfield went up the other end and scored their third try when Joe Wardle found a hole in the home defence. Brough's goal made it 16-0 on 28 minutes.

The Vikings continued to enjoy a decent share of possession and finally opened their account two minutes before the break when Kevin Brown's superb long pass put Corey Thompson over in the right corner.

Widnes had a chance to put a dent in the Giants 16-4 interval lead just three minutes after the restart but White lost the ball as he attempted to dot it down under the posts.

On 45 minutes, the Vikings did hit back when Joe Mellor raced in from 40 metres from Rhys Hanbury's pass. The Widnes fullback added the extras to make it 16-10.

Ten minutes later winger Stefan Marsh finished off at the left corner after Brown and Hanbury had done the spadework to narrow the gap to four points.

Widnes hit the front when Thompson latched onto Mellor's high kick and intelligently grubbered ahead before following up to score.

Denis Betts' men now had their tails up and and Mellor showed great game awareness to skip under the posts on last tackle to establish a 24-16 lead for his side on 65 minutes.

The game was back in the melting point ten minutes from full-time when quick hands put Huddersfield winger Jermaine McGillvary over wide out to reduce the arrears to four points.

As you might expect from a side that had lost it's previous eight games, there were no heroics from the Vikings in the nervous final stages.

When the final hooter sounded the relief around the Select Security Stadium was palpable.
